What is Sin? What is Salvation? (Mark12:1-12)
A. Our past was ruled by sin
1) The sin of forgetting the one to whom we belong (1)
He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. (1)

2) The sin of ignoring God's messenger (2-5)
At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed. (2-5)

B. The beginning of salvation
1) Using parables as prophecy (6-9)
"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, `They will respect my son.' "But the tenants said to one another, `This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard. "What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. (6-9)

2) God's kingdom has already started (10-12)
Haven't you read this scripture: "`The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone ; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ?" Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away. (10-12)

Summary Jesus used parables to teach us about human nature and sin from the beginning of time to the present. Through his parables, we learn that the core of sin is our unwillingness to accept God's authority in our lives. Even before Jesus came to this earth, God gave human beings many chances to turn to him, but we did not listen. Jesus came as God's final offer to human beings, and even then, many did not believe him, and put him on the cross. On the cross, it looked as though sin had conquered, but three days later, it became clear that this was not the case. Today, many more followers of Jesus are working to build the kingdom of God.

For Discussion

1) Why did the farmers kill the servants and the son of the man?
2) Why is this seemingly hopeless parable a hopeful one?
