Sermon Notes for 11/16/2014 (Luke 9:10-17)
The Blessing that Comes from Giving of Yourself

A. The significance of "breaking bread" (10-17) (22:19-20; 24:30-31)

10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida, 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing. 12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” 13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish―unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

22:19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

24:30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.

B. What happens in churches

1. Healing and giving hope (10-14a)

2. We have a role to play despite our limitations (14b-17)

C. What each person contributes

1. Giving of oneself

2. Sharing in thanksgiving and praise

Summary
Jesus gave himself for us, offering life through his own death and suffering. The church has been given the role of sharing this hope with people. Everyone has deep needs and longings that other human beings cannot fulfill. As we give thanks and praise to Jesus, we can share the tremendous grace that God has poured into our lives.

For Discussion
1) What was necessary for this miracle to happen?
2) What does it mean for you to give of yourself?
