Sermon Notes for 5/24/2015 Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13)
The Spirit of the Lord Descends on Us Andy Nagahara

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. " (Acts 2:1-13)

A. What is the Holy Spirit like?

1. The Spirit that rested on Jesus (Isaiah 11:1-5)

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

2. The Spirit that brings redemption (Isaiah 59:19-20)

From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD, and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory. For he will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the LORD drives along. "The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD.

3. The Spirit that guides us and gives us rest (Isaiah 63:12-14)

who sent his glorious arm of power to be at Moses' right hand, who divided the waters before them, to gain for himself everlasting renown, who led them through the depths? Like a horse in open country, they did not stumble; like cattle that go down to the plain, they were given rest by the Spirit of the LORD. This is how you guided your people to make for yourself a glorious name. (Isaiah 63:12-14)

B. We long for the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-13)

Summary

The Holy Spirit, along with the Father and the Son, is one manifestation of the of the one true God. The Holy Spirit is the same spirit who rested on Jesus, who helps us to follow Jesus, and who guides us and gives us rest. With Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection, the presence of the Holy Spirit, which was prophesied in the Old Testament, became a reality. The fact that we are gathered here today to worship together demonstrates our readiness to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Let's ask to be filled with God's Holy Spirit today.

For Discussion
1) How would you answer someone who asked you who the Holy Spirit is?
2) Why do we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
