Sermon Notes for 12/2/2012 (Advent 1) (Isaiah 2:1-5)

Isaiah's Vision

A. The beginning of the end

1) People will hear Jesus' teachings (1,2)

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the last days the mountain of the LORD's temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.

2) Jesus' words will serve as a guide for the world (3)

Many peoples will come and say, "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths." The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

B. The beginning of peace

1) Jesus is the king of peace (4)

He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

2) Let's walk in the light of the Lord (5)

Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Summary
Our society lacks a true guide as is evidenced by the confusion and conflict we find all around us. The Bible teaches that Jesus' coming to earth was the beginning of the end when peace would reign, but on the surface, nothing seems to have changed. In reality, however, peace has come into the hearts of those who believe in Jesus as their Lord. Our world may not be filled with light just yet, but Jesus' light, that came into the world 2000 years ago, is shining and spreading more brightly as his believers shine his light throughout the world. Let us receive God's light and celebrate Christmas as those who spread his light

For Discussion
1) What will the end of the world be like?
2) How does the Lord guide us?
