Sermon Notes for the First Sunday of Advent 12/1/2013

The Savior Whose Birth was Prophesied

A. Immanuel

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, "Ask the LORD your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights." But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test." Then Isaiah said, "Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:10-14)

B. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peac

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6,7)

C. The Lord is our salvation

"The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:5,6)

Summary
The birth of the Savior had been foretold hundreds of years before. Because the prophecies describe who the Savior is and what he will do, we know that it was Jesus. Jesus is always with us, bringing God's peace, power, and justice. He is the one born to us 2000 years ago and that is why we celebrate Christmas. May Jesus bring his light to our hearts this Christmas.

For Discussion
