Sermon Notes for 2/9/2014 (Acts 18:23-28)
Apollos, A Learned Man

A. Paul's third missionary trip (23)

After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

B. Apollos & Paul: Two different styles of evangelism (24-28)

1) Similarities and differences between Apollos and Paul (24,25)

Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.

2) Priscilla and Aquila: Mutual friends of Apollos and Paul (26)

He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

3) Apollos was sent to Achaia (27,28)

When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

Summary
20 years after Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, the disciples continued to introduce people to Jesus as he had commanded, and their work of sharing the gospel had reached Rome. The book of Acts is focused mostly on Paul and his ministry, but there were many people who participated in sharing the gospel in different regions. Apollos had worked apart from Paul, but through their mutual friends, Priscilla and Aquila, both of their ministries were strengthened.
