Sermon notes for 7/20/2014 People of Old Testament-7 (Genesis chapters 25-32)
Jacob: A Man Who Continued to Struggle for Blessing

A. Born grasping someone else’s heel (25:23-26a)

(25:23-26) The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

1) Taking the birthright of the eldest son (25:29-34)

(25:29-34) Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I'm famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.) Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.

2) Tricking his father into blessing him (27:36)

(27:36) Esau said, “Isn't he rightly named Jacob? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!”

B. Becoming a person who limps

1) Asking God for help (32:9-12)

(32:9-12) Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’ I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children. But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.’”

2) Wrestling with God (32:23-32)

(32:23-32) After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.” The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.

Summary
God gives each of us what we need and is pleased when, like Jacob, we persistently ask for his blessing, rather than simply waiting as Esau did. We don't need to push other people out of the way to receive from God. Instead, we should gladly receive whatever God gives to us and to continue to approach him for blessing. Our wrestling needs to happen, not in the form of competition or outwitting other people, but rather as we face our own inner struggles and ask for God's intervention. In doing so, we find that God is ready to engage with and respond to us.

For Discussion
1) Why was God more pleased with Jacob than with Esau?
2) Please share any experiences you have of wrestling with God.
