Sermon notes for 4/19/2015 (Luke 9:57-62)
The Challenge of Following Jesus Mari Ikea

A. What it means to be a sojourner (57-58)

57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

B. Putting God first in everything (59-60)

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

C. Continuing to move forward (61-62; Philippians 3:10-12)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

(Philippians 3) 10 I want to know Christ―yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained. 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Summary
Following Jesus does not guarantee that we will not face struggles and suffering in our lives. Because we live in a world that has not completely submitted to God's authority we find ourselves caught between reality and the ideal, sometimes leading to discouragement. There are times when we feel rejected or misunderstood and yet we need to keep moving forward with something that we believe is God's will for our lives. Let's stop being surprised by the fact that we face difficulties and put our hope in Jesus as we follow him.

For Discussion
1) In your life, when has it been difficult to follow Jesus?
2) What is the hope of those who follow Jesus?
