Be still, and know that I am God (Psalm 46)

1. A world in which the order God created is broken (1-7)

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. <Selah>
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. <Selah>

2. How to have a healthy worldview (7-11)

7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. <Selah>

8 Come and see the works of the LORD, the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear, he burns the shields [1] with fire.

10 “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. <Selah>

 a. Be still before the Lord

(Luke 10:38-42) As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. [1] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

 b. Know that the Lord is God

Summary

The reason why the whole world seems to be sick despite the fact that everyone wants to be happy is because people are looking in the wrong places. God is telling all of us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” This means that we need to leave everything behind and come before God. If we stand before God without being weighed down by distractions, we can see how God is embracing, protecting, and supporting us no matter what the circumstance.

For Discussion

1) What do you fear the most right now?
2) What does it mean to be still?
