The Righteous Anger (Galatians 1:1-5)

1 Paul, an apostle -sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead- 2 and all the brothers and sisters with me, To the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

A. In order to save churches from crisis

1. Paul’s Anger
2. Situation of the churches in Galatia (2)

B. In order to obey God, instead of obeying people

1. Not by human authority, but by God’s authority (1)
2. Only for God’s glory (5)

Summary

Paul did not hide his anger towards the Galatians in order to save them from their crisis, because he knew they were turning away from Jesus. We are responsible for each other to correct each other’s mistakes. We are not obeying human power, but God’s authority. If someone goes against God’s love, we need to confront them saying “no,” even if they don’t listen to us. This is not a selfish anger, but it’s the righteous anger which is necessary for God’s love to be revealed.

For Discussion

1) Why can we say Paul’s anger was the righteous anger?
2) How can we distinguish the righteous anger from the one that is not?
