Gap Between Ideal and Reality? (Galatians 3:26-4:11)
A. Is this the ideal God wants? (3:26-28)
26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. (1Corinthians 12:12-13)
Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. (Colossians 3:13)
B. God’s ideal became a reality (3:29-4:7)
29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. 1 What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.
1. The reality that Jesus Christ came to this world
2. The reality that we are God’s children
C. Let’s believe the ideal that was already made a reality (4:8-11, Romans 8:14-17)
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God―or rather are known by God―how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces[d]? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. (Romans 8:14-17)
Summary
God’s ideal (=God’s kingdom) was already realized by Jesus, while we are also already made God’s children by believing in Him. But it is still in an imperfect form. Everyday we suffer from the reality that is so far from God’s ideal. But wait a minute. Which is “the true reality”? Let’s believe the ideal that God has already made a reality!
For Discussion
1) What do you feel it is a gap between ideal and reality?
2) What is the ideal that God realized? What is it specifically to you?
