Who are the People of God? (Psalm 46)

0 For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.

2 How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!

3 He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet.

4 He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved. <Selah>

5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy, the LORD amid the sounding of trumpets.

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7 For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm [1] of praise.

8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.

9 The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings [1] of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

1. People of God in the Old Testament

2. People of God today

3. People of God in the future

Summary

God revealed himself to the people of Israel before all other people, but this was not because he was limiting himself to be God of only the Israelites. A surface-level reading of the Old Testament might leave the impression that God was a nationalistic God who wanted all people on earth to submit to Israel, but that would be a misunderstanding. Regardless of race or nationality, all who believe and follow Jesus are people of God.

For Discussion

1. What is the kingdom of God?
2. Why can you claim to be one of God’s people
