Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you!

– From the Christian hymn”O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

(Isaiah 7:10-14, Matthew 1:21-23)

(Isaiah 7:10-14) Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, “Ask the LORD your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test.” Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience of my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

(Matthew 1:21-23) She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” –which means, “God with us.”

1. To free you from captivity

Come, come, Emmanuel; Free captive Israel,
Who mourns in exile, Deprived of the Son of God
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you, Israel!

2. To save you from the fear of death

Come, Jesse’s branch, Yours from the claw of your enemy,
Yours from the cave of hell And from the pit of the grave, lead out.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you, Israel!

3. To change your reality

Come, come, O Rising, Coming to comfort us
Dispel the clouds of night  And the dire shadows of death.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you, Israel!

4. To give you a blessed future

Come, Key of David, Reign, open the heavenly dwelling
Make the journey above safe  And shut the way to hell.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you, Israel!

5. To help you live the life you were created to live

Come, come, Adonai! Who to the people on Sinai
Gave the law from above  In majesty and glory.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel is born for you, Israel!
